Sammy Jo, otherwise known as finch, has her roots planted in Brownsville, TX, where she has lived most of her life. She briefly lived in Austin, TX, where she received her Bachelor’s in Writing and Rhetoric and was named the “Outstanding Graduate in Writing and Rhetoric” of the St. Edward’s University ’21 graduating class.
She has been published in Hilltop Views, a student-run newspaper; B.Hooved, a student-run humor zine, and ALaModa Magazine, a collaborative print and online zine focused on showcasing art by artists of all mediums. She has been awarded with a 1st place editorial by the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association for a Hilltop Views article published in 2019. She was showcased by the Rio Grande Valley Equal Voice Network for her poem about the census, titled, “A Love Letter to the Census,” in 2020. She self-published a chapbook titled, “Meaningless Mornings & Noteworthy Nights” in 2021.
She currently writes grants and other professional documents for the City of Brownsville, where she strives to give back to a city that gave her so much. She is currently working on a two-person play based on William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience, where she explores cultural and generational trauma, complicated mother-daughter relationships, and the many different ways to say “I love you.”
